With the frankly flabbergasting PS Plus price increases announced overnight, Sony is in need of a win for its subscriptions – and a big one at that! One way it could curry favour with long-time members is by upgrading its PS2 emulator, allowing it to bring back classics from the early noughties alongside the PS1 and PSP titles it’s been adding as a PS Plus Premium perk.
It’s worth noting that the Japanese giant did build a PS2 emulator for the PS4, which resulted in the release of a few dozen retro titles, like Twisted Metal Black and Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. But it was roundly criticised due to its buggy performance and general lack of features, and Sony eventually stopped releasing new games for it.
Popular PlayStation YouTuber Mystic claims to have it on “good authority” a new emulator is on the way to PS5 and PS4, although he stopped short of sharing any specific details. It’s probably worth noting at this point that Mystic, historically, has never billed himself as an online “insider” or “leaker” – although this gives him considerable credibility, as he’s clearly confident in his information here.
Considering how much work Sony has put into its aforementioned PS1 and PSP emulators, which now include support for multiple regions as well various other quality of life features like save states and rewinds, it does appear the Japanese giant is serious about bringing back content from its archives. And it makes sense for the PS2 to be the platform holder’s next target.
Obviously, we hope this turns out to be true, because it’ll result in the archival of more content on the PS Store, which is a positive for preservation. And, as we alluded to at the top of this article, with PS Plus Premium’s price rising extortionately moving forward, it’s going to need all the content it can muster to justify its inflated cost.

He came into the Reddit Thread in the leaks Subreddit and corrected this by saying that he is just assuming because they surely dont leave all those PS2 Games buggy on PS5 (they probably will). So eh...
Mystic is great. He doesn't usually break news but he’s not a shock jock, he's balanced and pretty reliable.
Oh, well, if a YouTuber has it on good authority then it’s definitely worth reporting on!
Seriously though, I really wasn’t understanding why the price rise was such a big deal, but that’s because I was focusing on the tiny U.K. rise, I can see the US increase is much more extreme.
If this is true, and we get a pile of DECENT games, I'm talking Tekken 4, GT3, Timesplitters etc. then that will more than justify the price hike.
But let's be honest, so far, the Premium Classics library has been a right old dud.
@thefourfoldroot1 Also gets way more expensive in the EU so not only NA. From 119€ to 152€ lol
I hope they are. One of the main reasons I have Premium is because of the classics and we’ve not had one new PS2 game.
@WizzNL They already explained it in the Blogpost. To "ensure being able to continue to deliver quality Games in the future" lol. Translation: We just want more money.
@thefourfoldroot1 I understand the scepticism with YouTubers but Mystic has steadily been making weekly PlayStation news videos for over 11 years. He isn't a 'for the clicks' type of shock-jock and more often than not tends to be right.
I will never bother with anything that's locked behind a subscription model; people are being trained to buy $400 consoles (which they've been trained to replace "mid-generation" now via "Pro" models) and pour endless money into content they neither own nor control anymore, and it's helped enable the current situation of unfinished, glitchy game releases and online-centric titles that get unceremoniously shut down; it's a throwaway culture where the end user has no rights and no meaningful voice.
I much prefer being able to permanently purchase games and bought a ton for XBox's Backwards-compatibility program. And I will always vote with my wallet accordingly, no matter what games or platforms are offered via subscriptions.
@themightyant Yeah, I’ve been subscribed to Ryan’s YouTube channel since the Vita days (2012 I think) and agree with you entirely. Mystic’s weekly LTPS (Let’s Talk PlayStation) segments are great and he certainly isn’t in the business of trying to get clicks or begging for likes. I respect the guy.
Just don’t subscribe if it’s too much, sending Sony the right message. Online gaming should really be free to play and the free games are never free.
I don't comment on rumors and speculation, even if I just did.
Why is it so difficult though? There's great ps2 emulators out there already so surely they could just modify one to run on ps5..
@MagisterMagi He says in his video he has it on good authority and then on Reddit he confirmed again that he has heard about it.
So many great games on that I want to pop in my PS2 disk from my library. Go on Sony honour the generation that put you on the map don't go and do digital version only thatll be a slap in the face to the ones that supported you.
Would be AMAZING to have my beloved SSX3 on PS5!
I’ll just let my essentials subscription expire. Xbox is my preferred platform for multi platforms anyway and I’m subbed to Gamepass ultimate until April 2026. Was debating on which platform to get MK1 for, this helped me made the decision.
Mystic is cool.i watch his shows on YouTube all the time.sony needs this.because the retro games.especially ps2 games have been horrible.word up son
Mystic is well respected in the gaming space. Not a dude looking for clout for sure. His content is top tier for PlayStation related news and videos. I’d take a safe bet he knows what he’s talking about. And if it doesn’t happen oh well. Not the end of the world. Would be great though.
@The_Pixel_King Completely agree. LTPS is great and I respect him too. He's just quietly gone about making his videos for over a decade without resorting to ads/partnerships/clickbait or other things. He's one of the good ones, a genuine fan.
It always boggles my mind how a bunch of fans can make emulators in their own time and do better than a company that has the resources and uninhibited access to the hardware and documentation to make a great emulator.
Been watching Mystic since I was an actual child, props to him. The goated PS YouTuber
It's been a disappointment to date that vs home-brew alternatives elsewhere there hasn't been a similar effort in-house on ps2 emulation & indeed even the number of ps1 titles added have been few in number.
Even if they wanted to make it a ps5 only feature for future releases & improve compatibility, it should've been a feature from launch of Deluxe/ Premium.
With previously third party IP's being removed from future PS platforms, trying to at least shore up a decent catalogue of the classic gens, alongside indies etc.,need to be alternatives for those players not wishing to jump on the live service games train.
I hope so because their current emulator is c**p.
On PC there is an incredible PS2 emulator which even deinterlaces, making so many PS2 games absolutely shine like new
I'll believe it when I see it.
I’d gladly pay Sony $20 for my PS2 discs to work in my PS5. I have a great collection and no way to play them.😢
Though I’m gonna go do a Google search for “PS2 emulator deinterlace” that @carlos82 mentioned b/c I’ve tried several in the past but they were all trash.😝 Just so happens I bought a new dvd drive recently for some reason b/c the old one stopped working. And no, I don’t consider it piracy to play discs I bought even if I have to break DRM or whatever, I paid for them, most at day 1 full price, PS2 days were balling.
@rjejr you can easily get a PS2 for that 20 and use all your discs perfectly whenever you want.
Guess that if this isn't vapourware and puts in an appearance, then it'll be for games on Plus Premium - the one that now has a stratospheric price tag?
Might as well just buy a 2nd hand PS2 or b/c PS3 fatty? Use all your discs and don't put a penny in the Jim Ryan piggy bank.
@rjejr it's basically the most popular emulator for PS2 but here is Virtua Fighter 4 with interlaced vs deinterlaced at the same resolution.
Burnout 2 would be nice.
I love my PS2 and I am a supporter of emulation and video game preservation! That said, excluding games from SEGA that will not come to any official emulator anyway, and the Silent Hill games most of PS2 classics from Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and even games made by Sony have modern and even PS4 versions.
They've needed proper emulation since they introduced the premium tier. At the moment the 'classics' emulation is poor. If they do it right with upped resolutions and performance, which is totally possible, if they put the work in, premium would be a very good offering. Let's hope the rumour is not only true but also high quality emulation
The best emulators that Sony made for the PS2 were the launch PS3s, especially the CECHA/B which had the entire PS2 custom chip set inside with some extra options for scale and smoothing on top as they passed from the EE+GS to the RSX.
Launch PS3s allow you to run OPL as well, meaning game streaming from USB or network. Plus you can use GSM which allows you to force a very sharp and crisp looking 1080i scaling which is better than the hardware upres that Sony used to go from 480i to 1080p. If your TV can deinterlace well and has some zoom control you can get a stunning wide-screen image with colours that pop, lower blur and an all round cleaner image that even my PS2 with Component cables can't manage.
I reckon it'd be cheaper to buy a good condition launch PS3, add an SSD etc than it would to pay for the top tier PS Plus for a couple of years, then you could have basically 99% of the PS2 library through a HDMI driven device.
Even the software driven PS2 Classics emulator for the PS3 beat what came out on the PS4, and with CFW can be repurposed with different games too. Main drawback is 720p limit (no 1080i/p here) and a lot of 60FPS games run at 30FPS or at least move between the two, I assume it's some kind of buffering issue due to how hard the PS2 is to emulate. Point is the PS3 still wins versus the PS4/5 here.
EDIT: I also recently tried the macOS fork of PCSX2 which uses Metal API (should run on Intel and Apple Silicon basically) and on a Mac with dedicated GPU (if it's Intel) performance can be decent with very little config. So Sony, when your PS2 games run better on a Mac than your own official hardware, isn't it time to admit there's a problem? It's the best selling console of all time and it deserves better than this. We've gone from the Ken Kutaragi years of building PS2 hardware and software emulation into the next gen to modern day Jim Ryan where it's being neglected even though the
PS5 is orders of magnitude more powerful than the PS3 and making a great emulator, although a significant investment at first, would be possible.
If they can get the very tricky PS3 classics working I'll be very happy as nearly all PS3 games come with trophies anyway. Be happy with PS2 classics too but they'll very rarely come with trophy support unless it's 1st party
@Beerheadgamer82 Unfortunately, I think the PS5 would melt trying to emulate the PS3's Cell architecture. Still, the PS5 might look better!
unless i can download the game(s), or i can use my disc drive for PS2 and PS3 discs, it isnt going to be worth it.
if i have to pay even more, to play games i probably own physically, its useless.
the consoles should be made to where they can read any generation of disc. that would make things so much simpler.
@carlos82 Thanks. I have used that emulator in the past, like a decade ago, but I never had enough PC horsepower to run a game well enough to want to play it. Even now their website says to rip the game and not run it off the disc. I just can't be bothered, I went thru my Linux and messing about phase in the 90s. It's plug and play for me these days. 🤷♂️
@Skeletor85 "you can easily get a PS2 for that 20"
I think your definition of "easily" and mine are different because I've looked on and off over the past dozen years or so since I traded mine in and have never come across one for $20.
You can buy an empty box for $30 - $40 on eBay. 🤑

The PS1 and PS2 library on PS4 and 5 is very small. More PS2 games on Plus Premium is long, long, long, overdue. The worst is the only streaming of the beginning of the HD era PS3 games. Even if a streamed game plays half decent there is still no local saves, screen capture, and often no dlc. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are only half the game without their dlc.
A PS1 and 2 emulator on the PS4 and or PS5? I'll see it when I believe it.
The only thing i'm happy about with these new services i refuse to buy is that it's making Sony bring back classic ps1 and ps2 games slightly remastered, but working on modern TV and controller, that are available for purchase on their own as well.
I very much happily got the siphon filter trilogy on sale for my enjoyment. Really fun games.
@LifeGirl
Agree. There's nothing on there that I used to love playing. It's been a waste of time for me
They need to put all of the:
Gran turismo's
Metal gear solid's
Splinter cell's
Virtua tennis
On there, then it'll be worth it for me. At the minute it's a waste of my time and money
If i can get games like black.scarface the world is yours.darkwatch.maximo.cold fear.grand theft auto vice city stories and liberty city stories etc.you can download them.or buy them.then its all good.word up son
Mystic really went from an obscure playstation YouTuber with 1k subs to a massive PlayStation youtuber and game collecting YouTuber ever since that one blind box haul went viral.
@themightyant
Fair enough, I wasn’t aware of him directly but sounds like he may be one of the few good ones.
This should have been ready at launch, and with the up charge they are doing now they probably still won't have this ready fir another year or so.
Forget the PS2 emulator, work on a PS3 emulator.
I'm my opinion, if this drastic price hike is due to adding PS2 games, it's still grossly overpriced. Albeit of they added PS3 emulation, or both PS2 and PS3.
@sanderson72
Apparently the Steam Deck can run RPCS3 (PS3 Emulator), not very well, but if it can do.it, I don't see why the PS5, a console 2 generations later couldn't run PS3 emulated games.
I think it's more likely Sony just doesn't want to spend the resources to do so.
ummm... who cares at this point? too little, too late. sony has proved itself to be grossly incompetent with its legacy titles and that is not going to magically change. how many ps2 games got released for ps4? 50? pales in comparison to the ps2 games on ps3 where there are over 300! that is quite an embarassment and insult for one of the greatest consoles of all time (ps2). oh, and if sony can't even get its ps2 emulator in a respectable state, how on earth is ps3 emulation going to be possible? i realize now that it was just a pipe dream to hope for ps3 backwards compability on ps5.
no, sony needs to do a LOT more to justify ps+ now... that would include releasing ps classics on ALL tiers of ps+ including essential. any less and they will lose people.
as for myself, i will not depend on or wait on sony to get its act together with its classic and legacy content... i will take matters into my own hands and play whatever game i want, from any generation using other means. trophy support and some performance/resolution improvements would have been nice, but i have no problem playing retro games on original hardware as they were meant to be played.
@LifeGirl
How about The Getaway? I really hope this is true!
@Kang81 there was a report where the purported emulator was running PS3 titles at something like 1 to 5fps, maybe 10 fps on a good day with a tail wind.
The problem arises from the exotic (wacky) PS3 architecture where those SPEs are far more complex than the multiple cores on the PS5's APU. At the end of the day, you're trying to emulate a multi-CPU, distributed processing, RISC based architecture on a (frankly ancient) push-pop x86 model. You're going to need a lot more grunt than the PS5 can muster to get anything running at a decent speed.
@sanderson72
I have to admit that I'm not knowledgeable on the technical aspects of all of this, it just seems that a more powerful console two generations past the PS3 would be able to handle it. I guess I just underestimate how much of a pain the cell processor has been.
@Bentleyma they’ve explained it. It’s called corporate greed.
@MagisterMagi He definitely didn't say he was assuming.
Even if Sony did come up with a new Emulator, it's not enough to get me on Premium at this insane price point. It would also have to allow me to play the games I already own. I'm not buying them a second time.
.....and don't even get me started on PS3 Games.
It baffles me why they can't give a nice wod of cash to a emulation hobbyist that knows what to do professionally, if I knew what to do I would happily take a measly 4 or 5 grand a month but I suppose every single tiny increment needs to be a profit even though billions have already being obtained.
@Kang81 Think of it this way-- Getting the PS5 (and the PS4 for that matter) to emulate PS3 games is like trying (and struggling) to learn a new language.
The PS3's architecture is very complicated, whereas that of the PS4 and PS5 is simplified. And this doesn't just apply to PS3, just about every type of emulator over the years requires some work and significant system power to even match the system it's targeting.
PS3 would be even better. 🫤
I still have both PS2 Fat USA and PS2 Slim Japan to play both of USA and Japanese PS2 games like Dance Dance Revolution games, K-1, The Sims games, etc so I don't even need PS PLUS PLUS to play rental PS2 games which don't even have DDR games.
What the point when they only release a handful of titles from old consoles and skip the ones anyone actually want to play?
There’s less than 10 PS1 game available in my country.
